I. Journal #9 - "Beast From Air"

At the begining of LOTF Chapter 6, a fighter plane is shot down which may
symbolize the war that is going on in the real world. How is this event
linked to the boys and their island? What is Jack's intrigue with Castle Rock?
Does it foreshadow something to come later in the story?

Revision ready for Publishing)

III. READ & REVIEW Lord of the Flies Chapter 6 in class

HOMEWORK

II. Project: "LOTF POST CARDS" - DUE 10/25

EXAMPLES:

LOSS OF IDENTITY

"[Jack] tried to convey the compulsion to track down
and kill that was swallowing him up." Chapter 3, pg. 47

"He [Jack] began to dance and his laughter
became a bloodthirsty snarling." Chapter 4, pg. 58

Civilization separates man from the animals by teaching
him to think and make choices. When civilization slips away
and man reverts to his more primitive nature, his identity
disintegrates. The boys use masks to cover their identity,
and this allows them to kill and later to murder. The loss
of a personal name personifies the loss of selfhood and identity.

III. Study Questions -

5. What do the boys discover when
they get to the tail end of the island?
6. Who volunteers to go first and see if the beast is ahead?
7. How does Jack view the island abutment they discover?
